Any thoughts on this wood? Micheal Dunn built a couple of killer guitars from it. I've been sent a sample and it looks great.

Wood looks great. I can't comment from experience though so I am no help. Is there a more common name for it?

A little more digging, I've found it refrerred to as "yellow bean", a native of Australia.

I put a spit coat of shellac on the sample and the grain popped out just like the guitar photos.

This is the sample in hand - literally - with one quick spit coat of amber shellac. Not bad, eh?!

Now I've got to work out a system for laying out and cutting rope bindings.

I know the guys who supplied the Yellow Siris to Michael Dunn & have done some resawing for them. I probably sawed the sample piece you have, if you got it from Robin & Marshal.
I have a couple of sets & will be building a weisenborne with it soon.
The figured stuff is really pretty & it seems to be very stable. I'm getting some neck blanks soon & am looking forward to giving it a try. The weight & hardness / stiffness feel about the same as Hond mahogany & I'm sure it will make fine necks.
When I was resawing, i reacted fairly violently to the dust. My nose ran like a tap, my eyes itched & I sneezed for an hour afterwards. On the second run I was a lot more careful & vacuumed up well after sawing.
I had the pleasure of playing one of Michael Dunn's Siris guitars & it sounded very very nice. It was a Macaferi style cutaway, so it would seem that the wood bends well too.

I did get it from Robin. He seems like an up front guy. I appreciate the heads up re: the dust. I don't need any surprises.

I am going to pick up a few uke sets and, perhaps, a Weisenborn.

I just finished bending a set of Yellow Siris sides. I've been having a bear if a time getting sides to bend to a new tight waisted venetian cutaway I'm building. The cutaway is very tight & after a bunch of practice pieces & a check of the temp control on my blanket, I figured I was ready for the real thing & promptly broke a nice Koa side.
The Siris bent beautifully. The grain lifted a tiny bit on one bend, but it glued back down invisibly. I think I like this stuff!
